A DAUNTING UNKNOWN IS FACED HEAD ON…

2020, Quarter 2

The world was hit with a pandemic, and it reached home. RENU Contracting Restoration, Milburn Flooring and Sunrise Door Solutions were conducting business as usual until March 20th when Governor Cuomo announced that 100% of non-essential workers must stay home in an effort to combat and slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. RENU’s emergency services division was deemed essential by the Governor and quickly stepped in to offer commercial disinfecting services to their customers. Being deemed essential, it was necessary and important that they put into action many safety protocols to ensure their field employees not only were safe but felt safe on the job.

Employees working on job sites were provided proper PPE and given strict guidelines consisting of always wearing PPE, providing hand sanitizer to each employee, not permitting lunch breaks in groups, completing a wellness questionnaire each morning prior to going to any job and taking body temperatures daily and installing washing stations on all work trucks.  RENU also took an added measure of appointing carefully selected employees who were dedicated specifically to the role of Safety Manager. A Safety Manager’s job was to make sure all employees were following the Covid-19 safety protocols at all times; all tools and shared spaces were cleaned regularly after use. During this time, management acted fast and established a way which allowed all office personnel to work from home providing computers and any equipment needed to remain productive.  The team stayed connected by utilizing Microsoft Teams, Go To Meetings, and RingCentral.  It was a seamless transition.

Once construction services were permitted again and the other divisions began functioning, RENU would not spare any safety assurances for customers and employees.  They hired an outside security company to take the place of the Safety Managers that were needed back in the field.  That company offers a service dedicated to traveling to job sites continuously monitoring safety measures, performing temperature checks and making sure all protocols are being followed.

With field operations functioning optimally and the busy summer season quickly approaching the attention turned to making a safe environment and getting support back into the office. After weeks of staying safe at home, the owners understood that employees might be apprehensive about returning to the office, so they got to work making a plan. Each individual’s workspace was assessed.

In areas where 6 feet of separation was not possible, plexiglass was added to serve as partitions and allow everyone their own space.  A disinfectant crew was enlisted to focus on continuously cleaning the entire office throughout the workday. The crew constantly circulates the office 5 days a week, cleaning door handles, switches and commonly used spaces.  Masks are required when walking about the building, temperature checks are required upon entering the building, and signs were placed throughout the building to remind everyone to use best practices for safety.  RENU, Milburn and Sunrise are part of the companies that operated from home and returned to the office sooner than others in large part due to the tremendous thought, consideration and investment that went into the safety of all their employees and customers.
