Winter Wonderland

2023, Quarter 1

On the morning of December 23rd, an extreme arctic cold front moved through the New York region, leading to record-breaking temperatures and wind chills below 0 degrees in the double-digits due to frequent wind gusts above 30 mph. When the cold front moved out of our area, the temperatures began to rise on December 24th, Christmas Eve, which caused everything that was frozen to start thawing out. Most buildings were unattended, with school buildings closed due to the Christmas holiday break. RENU Restoration received calls for flooding from multiple schools in the area, with the most damage being found at St. Patrick School in Smithtown, North Shore School District, Amityville School District, Rockville Centre School District, Sachem School District, Eastern Suffolk BOCES, Byram Hills School District, Ossining School District, Middle Country School District, and Mt. Pleasant School District, to name a few.

Amityville Edmund W Miles Middle School had one of the larger floods. The surrounding area of the school lost power and caused the pipes to freeze in every classroom on the west side of the building. 35-50 pipes burst in over 30 classrooms. When RENU arrived, the seen pipes were still actively bursting, escalating the damage that needed to be addressed. The first matter of business was to shut off the water source. Seaford Plumbing was on the scene to assist RENU’s team in replacing pipes. RENU extracted the water and distributed dehumidifiers and fans to dry the area fully. Some areas required floor and ceiling replacements due to water damage. Fortunately, the school was closed for another week following the event due to Christmas break. RENU completed this job by the following Monday when the students were due to return to the classroom, leaving enough time to get the building up and running like a flood never happened. This was just one of many school districts that were affected by pipe bursts and were able to get the building back up in running before the students came back.
